The same phenomenon has been observed in blue-tailed damselflies. Guppies raised in all-male tanks get used to courting one another and are less likely to mate with females later in life. It may even be possible to influence sexual preference in some species. Female albatross pairs seem to view males as little more than sperm donors, getting pregnant and then immediately returning to the female partner. A pair in New York adopted an egg and became successful parents. Male-male penguin couples have become a fascination among zoo-goers.

Same-sex, long-term pair bonding is fairly common among some bird species. Approximately 6 percent of rams court and have sex with other males and do not respond to female sheep in heat. If our ancestors had been exposed to a little more ram or albatross sex, dogs may have escaped their prejudices. Mankind probably associated dogs with homosexuality simply because they had so many opportunities to observe canine copulation.
